Supporting those who provide cancer care

Healthcare
Providers

Healthcare workers need support in order to provide patients with a high level of care.

Our self-stewardship trainings focus on reducing empathic distress and emotional burnout.

We also provide trainings and consultancy on leading cancer care groups and emotion regulation processes. These offerings are derived from empirical research.

Spiritual Care
Providers

We also provide support to spiritual care providers, including monastics and healthcare chaplains. We offer consultations, workshops, and training retreats.

An essential aspect of our work is providing support and education to those serving in low- to middle-income societies.

We support the efforts of the Clear View Project, the International Network of Engaged Buddhists, and Upaya Zen Center

Research Initiatives

Our research focuses on the well-being of those living with cancer. We study the psychospiritual and social support needs of patients, and also the impact of practitioner well-being on patient well-being.

We design clinical trials to address the spiritual pain that many patients experience following a cancer diagnosis. Our mindfulness-based interventions incorporate core Buddhist practices, such as equanimity and compassion.

We are also interested in how engagement in solitude practices (e.g., spending time alone in nature) and engagement in contemplation or prayer impacts psychospiritual outcomes.

Our research is conducted within the School of Psychology at the University of Derby.  Please see our provider page for more information.
